Back in college, I used to spend almost my entire week in Laguna and no time (and money, in my case) to go back home spend time with, or attend friends’ birthdays. On the other hand, Laguna seemed like a stone throw away when friends come by and visit. Such small occasional visits are really something. Now, I’m back here, and some friends outside the metro. It’s my turn to give them the heart warming visits I felt back then. For us, birthdays are really hard to miss and personally, it’s sad to celebrate ones birthday alone. Today, I’m visiting a friend, some place not far North to celebrate his birthday and take the opportunity to see life in a city outside THE city. Today, we’re going to get lost… lost in Angeles – Angeles City, Pampanga.

So later that afternoon, we took a Bataan Transit bus at the Five Star terminal in Cubao and got off in San Fernando Junction. From the intersection, we rode a jeep to Angeles City. Being caught by the rush hour got us a three-hour trip but we were asleep anyway. When we arrived that night, we greeted happy birthdays and spent the occasion over a few drinks before we went out for a late night cap in Angeles. Though out of regular city night spots, we found ourselves knocking back shot glasses in one of the Metro’s popular bars, Central BBQ Boy Grill – Angeles City Branch. On its wooden picnic tables, we sat and drank their trademark cocktails as we celebrate the annual occasion. After a few pitchers, we called it a night and went to the hotel.

Mr. Birthday Boy and cousin in Central BBQ Boy Grill – Angeles Pampanga.

That morning, I got up on my travel toes and peeped through the east window. An thin line of amber stretches out over the horizon. Light was good, weather was fair, I grabbed my packed and went out for a shoot.

Aside from attending my friend’s birthday, I took the opportunity to go around, and see for myself what Angeles City has to offer. I left the hotel alone and took a jeep towards Bayanihan Park then rode another jeep to the Holy Rosary Parish Church of Angeles City. Distinct for its symmetrical characteristic from exterior to interior, this two-towered church it stood as Angeles City’s most famous landmark. Not just an architectural marvel but it also witnessed history unfold in this Pampangueño city. Spanish colonials imposed the construction of this structure through “polo y servicio” wherein our brothers from Angeles City were the victims of this inhumane act.

The twin towered facade of Holy Rosary Church.

Church gates’ arch.

The Holy Rosary Church’s symmetrical feature from it’s arches, windows, pillars, etc.

Bird’s eye view of the church’s interior.

Across this historical church is the 1920 vintage Museo Ning Angeles telling stories of the town’s heritage, traditions and culture. I’m a bit too early for the opening hours so instead, I researched bits and pieces of history of this building. Once the Municipio Building since the American Colonial days during the term of Atty. Juan Nepomoceno, a significant and interesting person in Angeles City’s history, and yes, they started Nepo Mall.

Museo Ning Angeles

In search of the famous sisig, I started walking around to ask directions. Different people gave me different instructions on which jeep to ride or should I walk. Finally, I asked a kind local police officer who even hailed a color coded jeep for me and talked to the driver where to drop me off.

If Narra is the Philippine national tree, and Sampaguita is the national flower, the nation’s widely known Sisig is a cut above all the other beer matches in the menu. Most, if not all, bars in the country serves the old Kapampangan dish as a complement to beer lovers, thanks to Lucita Cunanan, popularly known as, Aling Lucing. Angeles made its way to the maps because of her dish made from minced grilled pig’s cheek, some liver, onions, and chili. Located by the old railroad tracks, Aling Lucing’s Sisig still continues to serve this well-loved dish by the Filipinos since 1974.

Aling Lucing’s Sisig

Earlier on my way to the church, I passed by this interesting park and decided to drop by instead before I went back to the hotel. As I walked through Bayanihan Park‘s ground that sunny morning, there were lots going on, everyone was minding their own business and activities. This park seems to be everybody’s place where people from all walks of life spend or kill time, doing what they have to do. Some were jogging and exercising, others simply sat on benches reading, while some preferred to sit down under the comfort and shade of this huge tree.

Aside from being just a park, it also has amenities like basketball and volleyball courts, a path for joggers, and wide ground area for holding occasions and events such as Close Up’s Lovapalooza. Bayanihan Park, foremerly known as Astro Park, also has a stage called Salakot Arch since the roof is shaped like a ‘salakot’ (a traditional wide-brimmed hat made from rattan). Bayanihan Park is definitely some place locals should be proud of. I hope we could have a same kind of park here in Cainta.

Bayanihan Park Marker & Salakot Arch

Path for joggers.

Benches under a shade.

Tree all dried up somewhere in the middle of the park grounds

Seek shade under this huge tree

I love going to the beach, but exploring new places like a city or a province also gives me the thrill. Seeing something new excites me. Angeles City is a city away from THE city. I just love the city-province vibe. The next time I’ll be here, I would feature food and other Kampangan’s delicacies.

====================================================================================

Now, here are some fast facts that may help you on your trip:

1. To reach Angeles via commute, take a Bataan Transit Bus or Genesis bound to Mariveles, Balanga, or Bataan which will pass by San Fernando, Pampanga. Get off at the intersection and ride a jeep to Angeles.

2. Go around the city by tricycle or their color coded jeepneys which varies upon destinations.

3. More photos in Biyaherong Barat Multiply.

4. Enjoy and have a safe trip.

Jed Ryan Rosell, born and raised in Philippines is the eldest among three siblings of retired Aircraft Engineer and Corporate Executive parents. He finished his degree in Media Arts at the De La Salle University, Canlubang and has since developed his passion for the activities he will later on gain inspiration from. Travel, photography, and music make the perfect formula of what he enjoys the most. He’s also found joys in advocating for the care and preservation of Mother Nature.

Biyaherong Barat is result of his drive to document all of his adventures where writing became a testimonial note of his photography. Majority of his earlier adventures if not all of it were around the Philippines. It has been and still is his immediate and ultimate goal to educate the Filipinos of the beauty that is around them. His aim is for Filipinos be proud of the Philippines. With that, he started his journal entries in Filipino for most of his blog entries, but as he finds himself deeper into his exposition, more and more followers from all over the globe come to visit his site for a glimpse of what is around the Philippines. This brought him to write for a bigger audience, hence, all of his recent articles are now written in English.

He envisions to make Biyaherong Barat to go global with the main message that travelling brings the outside perspective and that it can be achieved in the most cost-efficient manner.

Dear reader,

I like sharing experiences and giving glimpses of the beauty, magnificence and wonders of different places I’ve been to others, and Biyaherong Barat would be the best tool to use. Every time I go somewhere, there’s always a new expereience, and I would like to share what I felt, what I noticed, and what I experience that hopefully can be of any help. I’m a novice photographer, I’m not a writer, but I’ll do my best to make Biyaherong Barat informative, and creative as well.

Destinations may not be as grandeur as other travel writers and photographers have gone. The places I’ve been may not be new to the ears. My experiences may not be as ‘astig’ or cool as others did. BUT, with my tight budget, I always try to make the most out of every trip, and make it as special and new as possible.

Traveling gives me a sense of fulfillment. There is something about being in new places I can not explain. I think that’s what I like about being in different places, the unexplainable feeling varying from destination to another.

To fund my travels, I recently began working as a photographer’s assistant in an advertising photography company hoping that through this field, I can learn to see light in a more sophisticated way and expand my knowledge and skill in the art of capturing light. Though earning a living, still, I am a First Grade student thirsty for knowledge in the photography world.

I’m no one but a regular guy who loves traveling to different places, looking for new experiences, a law-abiding citizen, a steward of Mother Nature, and I love my country very much. I am Jed Rosell, the author of Biyaherong Barat 113.

Hopefully, I can give a tip or two and be helpful to your travels. Have a nice and safe trip.

Sincerely yours,

Jed Rosell

Aurora offers a lot more than just the beach. Though a coastal province, it’s also rich in natural land wonders. Rich green forests blanket rugged mountain ranges which serves as the gateway to the province from Nueva Ecija. Beneath these gates lay natural treasures any adventure seeker would be itching to get his foot on. Well, prepare to get your feet wet because our next adventure will take us to the mother of San Luis, let’s go to Ditumabo Falls also known as, the Mother Falls.

Out of my 4 visits in Aurora, this is my 3rd visit to the Ditumabo Falls. Seemingly, a visit to Baler won’t be complete without a sidetrip to the falls. So from the salt water Sabang Beach, we went to a town South of Baler called San Luis where fresh cool water run in streams and creeks.

From the Ditumabo Bridge, we took a left then on the first ascend we alighted the tricycle, then started walking since our three wheeled transportation cannot push through with the four of us on it. The first trail was an easy 30-45 minute on a relaxed pace to the registration area which has a basketball court. From there we passed by San Luis Mini-Hydro Power Plant, ascended on an easy slope until we reached the first stream where our Calvary began. Strong currents and slippery rocks challenged our not-so-skilled trekking skills, but we still made it through. Our map was the large pipe where water from the falls passes through to the plant. Following the pipe took us to the Mother Falls.

Ascend on the first trail of rocks and pebbles of different sizes

Passing by a wet trail.

Some local woman posing in front of the “This way to Ditumabo Falls” signage.

The basketball court in front of the registration area.

San Luis Mini-Hydro Power Plant

Crossing the first stream.

The thundering roar of the falls echoing on the gorge signifies we were getting closer. The last few steps before I saw the falls gave me goosebumps. This was the feeling I had the first time I saw this 140-foot falls, and the second, and now. I stood and, again, I was astonished by its grandeur and magnificence. You can feel its power even from a distance. Watching the cascade smash on the clean, and green water gave me a feeling of peace and serenity. The agonizing hike has its rewards at the end.

Compared to my last visit, water level rose way higher turning it into a large pool of all natural clean water. But it’s still the same old cool, clean and refreshing water that will make you forget you just walked 4 kilometers of rugged terrains, and through streams with strong currents. Without hesitation, I jumped into the cool water and swam towards but not where the cascade drops.

THE Mother Falls of Ditumabo.

Tammy and Maiya at the fence of some sort of filter for the plant.

Aside from it magnificence, grandeur, and beauty, Ditumabo falls plays a key role in San Luis. Though 95% complete, this natural wonder generates electricity more than the whole municipality needs. Indeed an Eco-friendly way of lessening resident’s electricity bill. Hopefully, the government produces and pushes through with projects like this, and the windmills of Ilocos Norte. It’s never too late to go green.

When we talk about Baler, Sabang Beach is probably the most well known in Aurora due to its booming rep as a surfing spot. However, since Baler is situated along the coast facing the great Pacific, there are lots of beach spots to check out. Far in a quaint baranggay can be found huge rock formations along the beach. Located in a Baranggay Zabali, Baler, we spent almost an entire day keeping it steady in our “isolated” spot called Digisit Beach.

After a nice heavy breakfast, the four of us plus the tricycle driver whom we made arrangements with to take us to places, headed North towards Baranggay Zabali, where Digisit Beach is located though the clouds and weather weren’t as friendly as expected.

I’ve been here once during my first trip to Baler but encountered road blocks due to landslides. There were no concrete roads before so at times we have to alight the tricycle and push it uphill. When I got back recently, roads were paved however landslide paths we’re still evident so, the rainy season probably wouldn’t be the best time to visit the area. On the other hand, the road runs on a mountain side and the view of the pacific was simply beautiful. Then we stopped to appreciate the view.

Tricycle on roadside. Notice the rocks and debris at the mountainside

Tammy and Maiya inside the tricycle. (This picture has no significance at all, I just like the treatment of the photo. Hope you like it as well.)

Rocks from the mountain side.

A quick stop to appreciate the beauty.

We descended the mountain side and landed on the beach. We saw small cogon huts which can be our temporary shelter from the unfriendly weather. A small sari-sari store stands across the road opposite the beach, and we asked permission if we can stay there for a fee, of course. On the other hand, if the sun was up and shining brightly, we’d probably parked on the roadside and stayed on a free spot. Anyway, just as we settled in our small refuge, the rain started to fall. There were several huts in the area and the caretaker told us just choose whatever, wherever since we were the only occupants during that time.

Small shelter from the rain.

More huts in Digisit Beach.

Occasional drizzles were still pouring down, nonetheless, we explored the area, walked, swam, and walked again, we’re getting wet anyway. From where we were staying, bermuda grass covered the campsite area. Sand covers the upper landward of the beach then turns to mixed sand and small corals as we get to shore. Corals and large rocks at the beach serves as break water from the Pacific’s big waves.

On the other hand, others may not find the area amusing since there are many rocks at the beach and may not be suitable for swimming. There are small basins however where one can just sit or lie down.

A quite distinct and unusual structure stands in the middle of those huge rock formations. The bright orange hut approximately 4 by 4 feet in area will definitely catch the your eye. Curiosity will leave you wondering why so you just have to go and see it. However, be careful especially when the tides are high or shifting. Rocks are sharp and slippery, some water shoes or sandals may come in handy.

Swimming area at the beach front.

The orange hut in the middle of nowhere.

Digisit Beach was so steady, I want to call it solemn as well. Its serenity and beauty of the place seems like a different world. If you want a different place to stay, not so far from the busy Sabang Beach, you might want to try Digisit Beach. The next time I go to Aurora, I’m planning to camp and spend the night here.

=================================================================

Now here are some fast facts which may help on your trip:

1. Tricycles from Baler town proper will take you to Digisit, however, going back might be a problem. Try to make arrangements with the driver, but try to haggle down to a reasonable rate if you think it’s too expensive.

2. Hut rentals cost P150/all day. There are spots where you can park … and they are FREE. The beach is a public place, you don’t have to pay anything if you’re not using their property.

3. You might want to see Baler – Heart of the Aurora Province, Baler, Aurora, Mother Falls in San Luis, Aurora and 1st Surf & Music Festival features.

We just can’t help it. Like some sort of gravity keeps pulling us back 9.8 m/s² towards the heart of the province. Maybe it’s an addiction, like once we were so addicted to Batangas, then to Zambales, and now, everyone in the group got hooked to Aurora. I don’t know if we’ll ever get tired of going back because this North-Eastern province has just tons to offer every adventurer, and every wanderer, local and foreign. However this time, it’s not about us. It’s about a very good friend who went halfway across the globe for the American dream. Now back for a short visit and under her tight schedule, we squeezed in 4 days she will remember for the rest of her life, and will relay her kids and grandkids the inner beauty of her Motherland. We want to show what Juan dela Cruz can offer that Uncle Sam cannot – traveling, 100% Pinoy Biyaherong Barat style. Hello Baler, we’re back, show them what you got.

I may be 16 hours too late but I won’t be missing this – probably once in a decade experience, to spend time doing things we never did back in high school. All the three of them arrived hours ago and they probably were busy tanning their skins while I was at home calling bus terminals asking for alternative transportation to Baler. My bags we’re packed earlier and as soon as I got the chance to leave, I headed off to Cubao’s Five Star Bus Terminal to catch a ride to Cabanatuan. I can’t wait for a direct bus ride to Baler, so I decided to do transfers. Sun was about to set when the bus left and EDSA’s traffic volume were becoming much dense, I got tangled with rush hour. There’s nothing I can do but sleep and hope that I could catch a shuttle or van to Baler when I arrive Cabanatuan.

The skies were dark when I woke up somewhere in a stop over in La Paz, the clock struck 7 and I was more than worried if I could ever catch the last trip. Worst case scenario: Sleep at the Cabanatuan Terminal. Fortunately, I won’t be needing my scarf as blanket since there was still a van about to leave for Baler. Taking a different route took us 3 hours from Cabanatuan. All in all, it took me 7 hours from Manila to Baler, an 1-2 hours later than taking the direct bus. Nonetheless, I still made it safe and sound. On my way to the rented room, I saw my buddies walking on the road side. I was so excited to see them after the long lone journey, I immediately asked the tricycle driver to stop. We spent the night with celebratory drinks while they were telling me their “productive” activities earlier that day.

Green sawali walls of BBC Inn.

Dining in the so called, “Rolling Store”, with lots of viands to choose from.

We got a small green room in BBC which is along Sabang Beach. It’s green sawali walls would really catch your eye if you’re walking along the break water, a few steps from Bay-ler View Hotel. This P700.00 room has a regular CR, and a bed. That’s it, just what we need since we spent most of our time outside or at the beach. In front of these green rooms is a common room where you can dine, drink, or just stare at the beach.

A big day lies ahead of us so we have to fill our stomachs with good authentic home cooked Filipino food so we took a tricycle towards town to a popular dining spot in Baler, “The Rolling Store”. We love eating in this place because there’s just so many viands to choose from (and it’s actually hard to choose because I want to try everything). The Rolling Store is actually a group of 3-4 food stalls serving their own specialty, but we usually go to a certain store. Still they allow us to get food from other stores. I got the chance to ask why they call it “The Rolling Store” and they told me they also don’t have an idea. These food stalls can be found just beside Museo de Baler.

After eating, we asked the tricycle driver to take us if ever there’s any ATM in town, and he took us in front of the Aurora Tourism Office and Aurora Government Office where there’s a Landbank and DBP (Development Bank of the Philippines) ATM. Both banks are along the National Road and a few steps apart.

Aurora Tourism Office

Aurora Provincial Government Building

Now that our stomachs are filled with a hefty breakfast and wallet’s replenished with financial resources (in my friend’s case), we’re off to another coastal town of Baler, the coral beach of Digisit Beach, where we spent the rest of the cloudy day on this isolated baranggay of Baler. [CLICK TO VIEW DIGISIT BEACH FEATURE]

Digisit Beach in Baranggay Zabali, Baler [CLICK TO VIEW DIGISIT BEACH FEATURE]

Spending almost the entire day in an isolated beach was really fun, and steady but a little exhausting at the same time. The long bumpy road going to Digisit and back was quite tiring. On our way back to BBC in Sabang Beach, we stopped by the public market to buy something to grill and cook our own dinner.

Cool breeze swept Sabang Beach and salty ocean mist sprayed on our faces as we walk along the break water towards BBC Inn. As the night fell deeper, winds howled like wolves stalking their prey, the same time we were cooking our meat and vegetables. Having a nice meal and some chit-chat over a few drinks was a good way to end the day.

Having dinner and some few drinks.

A quick morning dip at the beach

From our beds we can hear the thundering roar of waves crashing, sweeping clean the shore. It’s a natural alarm clock I suppose. As soon as I got up, I instantly head for the beach for a refreshing morning dip (and yes, I was on my board shorts when I went to bed). Cool and refreshing the salt water was, I was ready for the days activity. But before everything else, we need to have a heavy breakfast and there’s nowhere else to go rather than the Rolling Store.

Today we’re off to a place when we can have a taste of a little bit of adventure since my “balik-bayan” friend opt for challenging this time. We took her to another town, south of Baler, called San Luis where the Mother Falls can be found. [WILL BE FEATURED SOON]

Mother Falls of Baranggay Ditumabo, San Luis [CLICK TO VIEW]

We went up, went down, walked on mud, walked on the river, everything was a challenge, but the reward was worth the effort. Lunch was skipped and we’re a long way back to Baler town proper. Everyone was hungry but the picture of the falls kept us going. When we got to the Rolling Store, all hell broke loose. Once again, our stomachs were satisfied. Thank you Rolling Store.

Energy was drained from the previous activity, but we’re not going to let the third and our last night pass without celebrating and recalling things we did the previous days.

Watching the full moon rise and under the glittering stars, we sat by the break water playing beach tunes as the waves made a music of their own. Such a beautiful night when we were celebrating the 4 memorable days we will remember the rest of our lives.

Lit by the full moon and under the glittering stars we sat and celebrated such a beautiful night.

Only a few hours left in our Aurora getaway, and there’s one last thing to do. Not surfing this well known spot is a mortal sin. Anyone’s trip to Baler would not be complete if one did not, at least, tried surfing. There’s nothing wrong with trying so they a friend put on a rash guard, and we’re off to Fely’s to rent a long board. Now it’s time to get wet, wild, and wave riding (or at least try to).

Instructor teaching student what surfing is all about.

At least we tried… at least we tried.

Surfing. It looks so easy, looks so smooth, looks so steady. Trust me, it’s not, if you don’t have the patience and perseverance. Someday we will ride those 10-12 foot waves, we’ll be gliding down the slope and up again to a big air, we’ll be catching a wave for a 2-minute ride which seems forever. But not today, my friend, not today. At least, we tried. On the next trip may be. I’d be keeping my hopes up that someday I can be a surfer. For now, we have to go back to our normal lives, back to the city, back to where each of us came from. We’re going back via Joy Bus, baby.

THE Joy Bus. [WILL BE FEATURED SOON]

This blog is for my good friend, Tammy, whom I never saw after high school and suddenly I heard she left the country for the United States and the “American Dream”. A few months before visiting the Philippines, she contacted me, told me that she read Biyaherong Barat, and she wanted to go somewhere not American. Her visit was short and we want to make it worth her while. So Tam, if you’re reading this, I want to take this opportunity to say something:

I want to thank you for the trip and hoping that you enjoyed your visit in our Mother Land, even for a short time. Tell everybody there how beautiful your country is (and how “pogi” your friends are). Be proud. Always a Filipino in mind, in words and in actions. Until we see each other again. Your B-52′s will be waiting for you.

=================================================================

Now here are some fast facts which may help on your trip:

1. Commuting via Cabanatuan:
Take a bus to Cabanatuan-SCTEX Five Star Bus cost around P180.00. Alight at the Cabanatuan Terminal and where the van to Baler is. Fare cost P220.00. Now, I’m not sure about the last trip but I was there around 8PM. A fellow passenger who lives in Baler told me that there’s still a next trip.

2. BBC’s Green Room cost P700.00 per night. It has one bed, a regular C.R., and a fan. The gazebo/hut is free of use. It has a bench, a cabinet, and a long table. A nice view of Sabang Beach is also included with the package.

3. The Rolling Store is at the town proper, beside Museo de Baler. To go there, ask the tricycle to take you there. Food cost P30.00-P40.00 per order.

4. You might want to see Baler, Aurora, 1st Surf & Music Festival, Mother Falls in San Luis, Aurora or Digisit Beach, Baler features.

The social networking site, Facebook, really made people get in touch so easily nowadays. Facebook has a “what’s-your-status” feature (I don’t know how its called, I’m a newbie on Facebook) which displays whatever statement you’d like the whole cyber world to see. This trip came from a random thought on a Facebook status about marathon and without any connection to the beach whatsoever. The statement was so powerful it warped us to one of Zambales’ hidden getaways, this is Silanguin Cove.

Prior to this trip, we already made arrangements from a friend in Pundaquit for a boat, a gallon of water, and a case of beer which we’re bringing to the Silanguin Cove. We left Friday morning and took San Fernando Exit to pick up a friend from Angeles City and entered SCTEX via Dinalupihan. Surprisingly, the trip was faster than I expected. We still had enough time to buy food and supplies in San Marcelino Market.

I’ve always preferred leaving Manila at dawn to catch a glimpse of the morning view of the Zambales Mountain Range as the first peek of the sun kisses the right face of the mountains. Staring at it stirs a feeling of content and satisfaction. Nature offers beauty which can be appreciated by anyone for free – one of the many reasons why life is so beautiful.

At Ferriols Residence, we met “Kulot” and Tatay Hesus, unload our equipment and set our sights towards Silanguin Cove. The winds and current were with us so we’re smooth sailing South and entered the cove and docked at Green Beach, a spot at the Southern tip of the cove which is surrounded by rocks and pools of salt water. The group, however, preferred to go somewhere we can swim on a sandy shoreline. On the other hand, I love the place because I think it’s very photographic especially at dawn and dusk. Shot lists started creeping in my imagination but I guess I should save it for the next visit, and pay an additional fee to take me there.

Puerto Silanguin’s main entrance.

Fenced camping grounds.

Camping grounds under pine trees.

Clean and cozy comfort room.

Our tents under the viewing deck to avoid the wind blowing our tents.

Everyone got back to the boat and went deeper into the cove passing by several fish pens along the way. We landed on a beach in front of a Puerto Silanguin, one of the few camp sites in Silanguin Cove. We scouted the area and agreed that it’s a good and safe place to camp. We were surprised, however, that the caretaker charged us P150.00 per person, P50.00 higher than we expected. On the other hand, it looks like a nice place to stay. It has a wide camp ground, and fenced for added security. The best thing about Puerto Silanguin is the comfort room. We were expecting a shanty so-so comfort room but it was nice. We got our packs and supplies and pitched our tents under a viewing deck in the area. We’re lucky that we were the only occupants during that time so it was quiet, peaceful, and only brushes of the pine trees and waves sweeping the beach were the only music adding to that sweet beach vibrations.

We spent the our first day just chilling, singing songs, enjoying the vibe. Later that afternoon, we watched the sun as it sets behind a small island on the far tip of the cove. Everything was steady, smooth, and serene.

Sun setting behind the small island at the Southern tip of the cove.

Watching the sunset from a small cogon hut in front of Puerto Silanguin

I woke up early the next morning and went for a short hike along the beach to the northern tip of the cove. The sun was only peeping, and a large part of the cove still rest under the shade behind those huge mountains. I passed by several huts, and a small sari sari store. When I looked up, the pale green mountain slowly turned into a large golden chunk of boulder as the sun started to rise. Looking at simple things you don’t see everyday is pretty much a big thing for me, so I stopped and watched it for a while. The grey sanded beach turned into a rocky shoreline as I went further until I reached a river mouth similar to Nagsasa Cove, however, t was a semi-dry river bed. I took my time a started to take some photo, I hope you like it.

At the Northern part of the cove near the semi-dry river bed.

A random “talahib” shot. (I don’t know what to call this)

Driftwood sitting on the rocky shoreline.

A part of the river mouth.

Few hours remain in this Silanguin Cove experience and we want to maximize what’s left. After a short breakfast, we headed South of the beach looking for a nice spot to swim and we found this isolated area (the entire beach actually seemed an isolated area), dropped our stuff and ran towards salt water. While chilling on the grey sand, we can’t help but stare at the marvelous mountain in the backdrop. As coined by a friend, “we were warped to another dimension, and landed on a desktop background for Windows XP”. And yes, it was so beautiful, it did not seemed to be real. It’s too good to be true.

The boys enjoying the marvelous view.

Lavishing in the grey washed sands of Silanguin Cove.

Everyone taking their time and minding their own businesses.

A small random thought brought us far away, and “warped” us to another dimension. Spontaneity showed us beauty, magnificence and serenity. Having no plan doesn’t necessarily turn to be a disaster, just follow your heart and “let your spirits, fly so free” (Above The Bones by Mishka). All the randomness got together and became one heck of a plan. Who knows, another random thought might bring us to Maldives, Santorini, or anywhere at the farthest corner of this planet. Until next time my friends.
===================================================================================

1. Back and forth boat ride to Silanguin Cove would cost P700-P800 per person. Call or look for him on Facebook, Reynald “Kulot” Liwarin for details. 0910-8162974 or 0906-9444388

2. Usually, entrance fees cost P100.00, but allot P150.00 for entrance fee. Puerto Silanguin offers a nice place to stay, and “Nanay”, the caretaker, has been really hospitable and helpful to us.

3. See my Nagsasa Cove, Anawangin Cove, and Capones Island blog which are also within the area.

4. Have a nice trip, enjoy and be safe.

Back in ’91, before the stars landed in Ayala Triangle, one star came shooting down from the night sky and descended beside on of the iconic places in the Metro. Families and friends gathered and flocked to see what the fuzz was all about.Vibrant colorful lights, countless motions, and beautiful smiles where all over the place. This heavenly body became one of the most famous tourist spots in Pasay City, welcome to Star City.

When I spend few of my college years in Taft Avenue, my classmates have been longing to visit Star City but the planning never made to execution. After eight years in the making, I had another opportunity to make it happen. Morning after Christmas Eve, and there was nothing to do. Tracy and I were planned to watch Asiong Salonga (an MMFF 2012 Entry), when we saw the winding and zigzagging lines for tickets, we decided to see the amusement park instead.

Tracy’s Going-to-watch-Asiong-Salonga-Manila-Kingpin Artsy Shot.

Cultural Center of the Philippines

It’s the first time for both of us to see Star City so we do not know what to expect. As we took a turn to Cultural Center of Philippines from Roxas Boulevard, we saw a huge number of people in Star City’s entrance area, but, “what the hell? We’re here. Let’s just get through with this.” It’s Christmas Day, what were we thinking?

We parked the car in Harbour Square and walked towards Star City. Hundreds of people flocked on the main entrance, while we asked around if there’s another entry point and the kind officer showed us to the other ticket booth. We purchased 2 Ride-All-You-Can and Snow World package for P430.00 and we made it passed the lines. Our eyes opened wide and jaws dropped when we saw people crawling like ants all over the place, but again, we’re here.

People waited for their turn to experience the ride. We’re not VIP’s so there’s no need to be ahead of somebody else, we just waited for our turn like everybody else. Keep in mind that patience is a virtue. In between rides, Tracy played gallery games hoping to win a prize, unfortunately she did not succeeded.

People wait in long lines for their turn to ride the Ferris Wheel.

Moving in circles.

Disappointed with the duck she can never fish.

Mixed emotions in Tornado.

After 2 rides, we had enough and can’t wait in line much longer. To end our Star City experience, we went to Snow World and had cool stroll inside. Management provides a jacket but you’d rather bring your own. Cameras and gadgets are not allowed inside and there is no deposit booth in the area. They packed your gadgets with plastics before you go inside. I wrapped my camera and lens with my extra shirt and sealed it with 2 plastics just to make sure.

Star City main entrance and car park.

Amusement parks are not really my style but there are lots of subjects to photograph especially if you want to play around with lights and motion

To sum it all up, we purchased the Ride-All-You-Can Package but we only rode the Tornado and the Ferris Wheel ONLY, and ended our trip with the freezing Snow World experience. It was just too tiring to stand in long cues, we could come back again anytime. Rides may only last for minutes but the experience was a hell of a ride which we can treasure for the rest of our lives.

====================================================================================

Now here are some fast facts which may help on your trip:

1. How to get there:
Star City is within the CCP Complex. If you’re driving from Makati, take Buendia and turn left to Roxas Boulevard. When you see the CCP, look for a U-Turn then head back. Turn right at the CCP Complex.

If you’re commuting, you may take the old LRT (runs along Taft Avenue), alight at Vito Cruz Station, and take the orange jeep in front of Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

2. Fees & Rates
Entrance Fee – P60.00 (no rides)
Ride All You Can – P350.00
3 Cheers – P300.00 (3 rides only, ride restrictions apply)

All the stars in the universe fell and landed at the heart of the business district.

From my not so busy schedule, I took a quick break and had a stroll in the big city. The spirit of Christmas were all over Ayala Avenue where Christmas displays lit the city with lights and lanterns hung from trees, and lamp posts, various designs curtained buildings, stores, and establishments. Everyone had their own gimmicks and surprises which enthralled people from the highest to the lowest end of the social class. (This only proves that the Christmas Season is for everyone).

All those lights and displays along the road were just appetizers for the main dish prepared by Ayala for everybody. A giant display of the Nativity welcomed people as they pass by Makati Stock Exchange towards Ayala Triangle Garden. Everyone was busy with their own agenda. Some were walking around, others sat down by the grass, some were having dinner, and others were just there plainly to kill time. Until all the lights suddenly turned off and silence spread out like wildfire in a dry land

A soft familiar melody started to play. Inflatable stars on trees were lit and started to bloom like a rose opening its petals. I was STUNNED. To my amazement, my jaw dropped wide open and the Christmas spirit entered my mouth and flowed through my veins, I was so pumped for Christmas. And that was just the beginning.

Different hues of light enjoyed by children, adults, couples, and families hanging out in Ayala Triangle Garden.

Christmas lights lit the whole park.

Enjoying the lights and sound display.

Lights danced and flickered in tune with the music, and just at it seems the show was about to reach the climax, there’s always another explosion of lighting technique bedazzling the viewers once again. While people were watching the display, I looked around and saw smiles on everybody’s faces. A smile of content, satisfaction, love, and the spirit of Christmas.

Those 30 minute exhibit of lighting techniques and musical arrangements may just be another tourist attraction for the visitors, but I’m pretty sure those 30 minutes may have change one’s persons view of what the Christmas season really means. It’s not about who has the more lights and the louder music, but for me, it’s all about feeling the joy, love, and the feeling of content where you appreciate everything especially the small things around you, especially if its free of charge. From that tiny vantage point, one can see the real beauty this world has to offer.

Thank you, Ayala people, for this wonderful gift to everybody. It may not mean much to others but for regular people like us, it’s a really big thing. You made us feel the spirit of Christmas. Amidst the problems experience by the country and by every individual, you gave smiles to the faces of the Filipino people.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2012 to everyone.
